This one-of-a-kind lampshade is inspired by a painted wallpaper border discovered during a recent visit to Calke Abbey.
Hidden away in one of the historic interiors was a charming decorative frieze of simple folk-style motifs — spirals, leaves and stylised floral emblems — painted in earthy pigments. I was immediately drawn to its quiet, handmade character and translated those motifs into this hand-painted lampshade.
Each panel is painted slowly by hand using a palette inspired by Farrow & Ball colours Setting Plaster and Picture Gallery Red, creating a warm combination of soft plaster pink, and deep oxblood red.
The result is a shade that feels both historic and playful — something that might sit just as comfortably in a Bloomsbury-inspired interior as it would in a traditional English cottage.
Every mark and brushstroke is applied by hand, meaning no two are ever the same. When lit, the earthy tones glow beautifully, bringing warmth and character to a room.
Perfect for a bedside lamp, reading corner, or anywhere that calls for a small piece of handcrafted artistry.

TAKING CARE OF YOUR LAMPSHADE
Care of your lampshade - I have been painting lampshades for nearly 10 years now, using professional artist's paint which is designed to be lightfast and not fade. You do not need to treat your lampshade any differently to a normal fabric lampshade - a light dust from time to time is all it will need. The paint sinks into the fabric fibres, as it would on a canvas, so once dry, it effectively becomes part of the shade and will not chip or flake.
